How to care for your Futon Mattress

Monday, February 9th, 2009

A futon is a dual-purpose piece of furniture that can be used both as a bed and as a mattress. While sleeping at night you can convert futon from a couch into a bed. But in the morning, you can change it back to the couch. Hence you need to keep the futon plump, comfortable and free from the stains. This can best be achieved by flipping it over periodically. Here we offer the simple methods to take care of the futon so that it can give you a long service.

1. Cover your futon with a futon cover if you want to use the futon as a couch. This will prevent stains, dust and oils from dirtying the futon.

2. Use a mattress pad or vinyl sheet if you want to use the futon as a bed. This sheet or pad is inserted between the fitted sheet and futon mattress and prevents staining.

3. Turn over your futon at least once a month if you use it as a couch. Rotate it often while changing the sheets if you use it as a bed.

4. Keep your futon in the sun at least once in six months to retain its freshness.

5. Hang your mattress out in the air every morning, if you are using futon to sleep. This will prevent the dampness from seeping in the mattress.

6. Remove the dust from the mattress regularly with a vacuum cleaner.

7. Use a rug cleaner to remove the stains.

8. Clean the mattress or certain spots with a scrub brush, warm water and detergent. Ensure it does not get very wet. Then let it dry outside.

9. Do not keep any wet objects like clothes or towels on the mattress because this will make the mattress damper.
