Today, there are various kinds of innerspring mattresses available, so selecting a good quality mattress isn’t easy. First, there are 5 different kinds of innerspring designs. Knowing what they are and what materials are used for making an innerspring mattress, will help you choose the correct innerspring mattress for you.
More than 90% of mattresses sold comprise innerspring mattresses. Producers of quality mattresses like Serta, Jamison and Kingsdown Mattresses make innerspring mattresses. So, you have a wide range of good quality innerspring mattresses for selection.
Two sure-fire means of deciding quality is to talk to the sales assistant and by viewing the mattress cutaway sample of the mattress, which is provided by every mattress manufacturer to their retailers with a small sample to help its potential customers.
Here is what you should look for.
Quality innerspring (or coils) are normally moderated with heat or electricity. This makes the coils highly likely to regain their original shape. Most quality coils are covered with plastic to prevent corrosion and wear. Usually, thicker the metal, the firmer the support and more durable the coils. Higher the gauge number, thinner the wire. Most leading mattress manufacturers like Kingsdown opt for a 13 gauge wire.
There are 5 different kinds of coil systems used in mattresses: Continuous, Karr, Marshall, Knotted Bonnell and Knotted Offset. A continuous coil system uses one strand of steel wire woven throughout the system. This system makes this mattress very stronger. The Karr systems has an hour-glass shaped coils with the end being unknotted. The major advantage of Karr coils is that each coil works independently. The Marshall system utilizes very light wire, since it plenty of coils. This system is exorbitantly costly and is hardly used in today’s mattresses. The knotted Bonnel system, just like the Karr, has hour-glass shaped coils, with each coil having 5 turns. The Knotted offset is just like the Bonnell but the difference lies in the upper and lower wire parts are squared off to fit together in a parallel manner on the upper surface. This avoids the sagging of the mattress.
Coil count does not necessarily imply that one mattress is superior to another. Stearns and Foster produce some of the finest mattresses on the market today but usually use fewer coils than other major mattress manufacturers. However, many quality mattresses have anywhere between 700 and 1000 coils.
Nearly all the leading mattress manufacturers today put on a soft top on their innerspring mattresses. This upper layer may comprise of upholstery, latex or memory foam. It can be 1-3 inches thick. Due to this upper layer an innerspring mattress has a soft feel and the coils beneath provide the support.
Lastly, when you sleep or sit on a mattress no coils should touch you. A quality mattress made by a leading mattress should give you a firm feel and provide support to your spine, pelvis and shoulders so that you enjoy a good night’s sleep
